2023-2024: Week 3 Player Reports

Game 1: Team Purple vs. Team Blue

-In what was expected to be a fun early-season battle, Purple may have exposed Team Blue as fraudsters.  If Blue’s only excuse is “Team Purple is just really, really good,” that doesn’t bode well either for a team with supposed title aspirations.  It sounds like Purple mostly coasted in this one, letting Blue shoot themselves in the foot again and again while Ed and Justin failed to take the initiative and keep this game close.  More balanced scoring from Purple’s top three who are now all averaging over 16 ppg.  Justin played the stinker of his career, Ed wasn’t much better, and Luke got blanked on a team that clearly needed someone to step up.  Felipe’s hot shooting continues and he’s scored in double digits all three games.  But if that’s the only highlight you have after 3 games, this team is badly underperforming so far.

Game 2: Team Silver vs. Team Green

-This game went exactly according to script until it didn’t.  Green lead by as many as 24 points in the first half and took a twenty point advantage into the half.  Then, EVERYTHING fell apart.  Ali caught a hot hand to trim the deficit and then Chris and Richie both started pouring in points.  Rob ran off the court and quickly threatened to quit the league for the 85th time, even though he was there for every minute of Green’s meltdown.  In fact, Aderman finally got going after Rob left and they mounted a last-ditch effort to reclaim the lead, but it was not meant to be.  Green falls to 0-3, which already feels like a death knell, and Silver avoids an 0-3 start, which felt inevitable for most of this one.  If they get this version of Richie and an active Matt Koll around the basket, we might need to remove the fork we stuck in Silver.

Game 3: - Team Yellow vs. Team Orange

-Yellow’s response to an disappointing 0-2 start of the season was to basically not show up and forfeit against the surging Team Orange.  No Jones.  No Poncho.  No Captain PotHead.  Orange got whatever they wanted all game long while Yellow’s short-handed reserves couldn’t keep up.  Chuck, Stan, and Mickey all got into double-digits for the first time, which is a positive development worth noting as Yellow tries to salvage their season.  Orange still feels untested heading into Week 4 against the struggling Team Green.

Game 4: - Team Pink vs. Team Gold

-Without their only nominal offensive player, it figured to be a tough night scoring for Team Pink.  Instead, Mark watched from the sidelines as Team Pink put up their highest output of the season, only to have their defense disappear and give up 96 points to a team with only five guys.  This was a baffling game to behold, but major props to the Goldies.  Finnin/Paul/Schick took advantage of EVERY opportunity given to them.  They hit their open shots.  They blew by defenders time and again.  And they shared the ball to find the right guy at the right time.  The true answer here is that Mark is needed to slow the game down through his glacial pace and keep this game much more competitive.  Bright spot for Pink was the HatchetBall debut of much-gossiped 4th round pick Marcus Stevenson.  He was there, alive and well, playing his brand of dogged defense and he hit a few shots.  The Gold Blitzkrieg rendered his efforts useless, but the dream of a complete Team Pink is now within reach.
