2021-2022: Week 6 Player Reports

Game 1: Team Orange vs. Team Black

-For the first time since Week 1, Team Orange was able to muster more than five players, providing them with an entire extra person for substitutions.  It seemed to make a difference.  Team Orange profiles as a team without major mismatches on the defensive end.  That’s a nice luxury to have so you aren’t getting exploited each week.  However, team defense will suffer quickly if everyone on the floor is tired.  They were able to sustain some stout defense for the entire 40 minutes against Team Black and scored just enough to get the win.  This win could be used as a major springboard for Orange moving forward.  They have plenty of scoring and enough talent to beat anyone.  If guys are showing up, they now have a chance to prove it.  Team Black will almost certainly finish somewhere in the middle of the standings this year.  They have enough roster depth that no one will blow them out, but don’t seem to have the roster cohesion to put it all together.  They have a high floor and a low ceiling.  Another first round exit for Steve & Chuck in the works?

Game 2: Team Green vs. Team White

-It’s bad enough that Team Green is almost halfway to a winless season.  Rob’s outbursts have given the whole disaster an extra layer of embarrassment that is getting tough to stomach.  Still, Rob and The Whiners were right in this game until the end.  That opportunity was likely more to do with another uneven performance from Team White, but the game was still right there for the taking if they could calm themselves and string together a few good possessions as the game concluded.  Instead, all the extracurriculars took center stage and Green walked away feeling like they lost by 20 instead of by 1 fucking point.  Team Green will be on BYE in Week 7 before facing off against Team Orange, who should be at full strength.  They better be ready to play hard and focus on the game or things will only get worse for them.  Team White strings together two 1-Point wins in a row heading into a showdown with Team Blue, who is also 3-1.

Game 3: - Team Red vs. Team Yellow

-Despite the doubters, Team Red ran its record to 3-1 on the season by easily taking care of the sputtering Team Yellow.  While you could easily point to Team Red’s three wins coming against the 3 teams at the bottom of the standings, there is no shame in simply winning the games you’re supposed to.  The playoffs are unpredictable and QUICK.   An injury or the right matchup at the right time has provided HatchetBall glory to many teams over the years, but not if you’re botching winnable games in the regular season.  Making the playoffs is the only goal in the regular season.  They are in great position to do that, regardless of how mediocre they’ve looked so far.  If Team Green is taking its cue from their crybaby captain, Team Yellow is similarly mimicking the passive absenteeism of their arthritic captain.  There are long stretches of the game where Team Yellow appears to not give a damn about anything other than jacking up a shot the next time they touch the ball.  It looks bad and there are no obvious fixes.  Expect them to get absolutely obliterated by Team Purple in Week 7.
