2020-2021: Week 9 Player Reports
Game 1: Team Blue (Troy)
vs. Team Orange (Garmes)
-In a must-win to stay in control of the second playoff BYE, Team Blue actually played a complete game for once, keeping Orange out of reach for most of this one. Team Blue will enter the playoffs as an imperfect team, but with players capable of putting it together. That doesn’t mean they will…just that they can. If they secure the BYE, they’d only have to win 2 quick games to grab a title. Anything is possible every year. Team Orange will close out their season against Team Green with last place on the line. Team Blue controls their own destiny. If they beat Team Red in Week 10, they secure the playoff BYE. If they lose by less than 8 to Team Red and Team Yellow loses in Week 10, they still get the BYE. If they lose to Red by more than 8 and Yellow loses, Team Red gets the BYE. If Blue loses to Red by more than 8 AND Yellow wins, Yellow gets the BYE. So plenty to look forward to in the season finale in Week 10.
Game 2: Team White (Hahn)
vs. Team Red (Dudek)
-Team White has quickly consolidated their scoring efforts around Rob over the last month, leading to some good wins. But the story recently has been their defense. They have the best defensive ppg in all of HatchetBall and they held Team Red to a season-low 48 points. They’re using their length and physicality to make things difficult on opponents. That will serve them well in the playoffs when things tighten up. Team Red is still in the hunt for a playoff BYE and have a big showdown with Team Blue in Week 10.
Game 3: - Team Green
(Koll) vs. Team Yellow (Matt V)
-Mirroring what they’ve done all year, Team Green looked solid for ¾’s of this one before running out of gas. Jim Schick led the way with a season-high 33 points, but they couldn’t keep up with the speed of Team Yellow, which is clearly their worst matchup in HatchetBall. In fact, they may be best served by losing Week 10 in purpose, as the most likely scenario is that Team Yellow will end up with the 4th seed, meaning they’ll play the 5th seed in the first round of the playoffs. But you’d be taking a big gamble, as it’s very unclear who will land where at the moment.
