2020-2021: Week 8 Player Reports
Game 1: Team Blue (Troy)
vs. Team White (Hahn)
-It would be easy to take a quick look at Team Blue and think that the problem is on the offensive end. Other than Mark, they only have one double-digit scorer right now, which is Mickey at 11.1 ppg, but his average only reached double-digits due to scoring 23 in Week 8, so in reality they have only one player on the team scoring over 10 points per game on a regular basis. Every other team in Hatchetball has at least 3 players averaging over 10 a game. 2 teams have 4 players that have sustained over 10 points per game. However, Team Blue’s real issue is defense and effort. They score enough and have been extremely good in close game, but their inability to handle transition continues to haunt them, allowing Team White to turn this game into a laugher early. It’s also possible Team White is just a brutal matchup for Team Blue. Other than playing Team White, Troy’s team is 5-1 with a +15 point differential. Against Team White, they are 0-2 with a -38 point differential. They better bring a different level of effort if they meet Team White in the playoffs.
Game 2: Team Yellow (Matt
V) vs. Team Orange (Garmes)
-Matt V’s youngsters continue their slide down the standings, dropping their 3rd consecutive game after racing out to a 4-1 start. It’s true they’re missing a couple players who can help them, but it’s hard to say if that will be enough to turn the tide. As the other teams have settled into the rhythm of the season, Yellow isn’t racing past teams like they were and have ended up relying on a barrage of shots by Pat and Konrad. So, what’s the game plan? That they hit more shots? That possibility is always on the table for every team, but they’ll need it every game or the easy baskets they allow in the halfcourt will continue to make things difficult for them. Team Orange got a much-needed win, their second of the season (both against Team Yellow). Seeding is looking more and more interesting each week. Clearly Team Orange likes playing Yellow, so they should do their best to make that happen in the first round if the opportunity is there in the last two weeks of the season. It would also help if their eighth-round pick scores thirty a game every week.
Game 3: - Team Green
(Koll) vs. Team Red (Dudek)
-Slipping past Team Yellow in the standings for the first time all year, Team Red has put together a three-game win streak of their own on a solid team effort. 5 players in double-figures in Week 8. Steve also scored 3 points. Red will get White and Blue to close out the season. In order to stay in contention for the BYE, they’ll need to beat Blue by more than 8 and/or beat White, depending on what Team Blue does in Week 9. But the BYE is worth going all out for and Team Yellow has the easiest remaining schedule at just one game back. Team Red should feel good right now, but if they drop the next 2, they could fall all the way to 4th in a flash. More of the same from Team Green in this one. Competitive all game, but lacking the dynamic play needed to close it out. It’s hard to say who Green’s best matchup is, so I’m not sure they should really care what seed they get.
