2020-2021: Week 4 Player Reports
Game 1: Team Blue
(Troy) vs. Team Orange (Garmes)
-Desperate for a win, Team Blue had no qualms jumping out to a big, early lead with HatchetBall ROY Justin arriving halfway through the first half. The rest of the game played pretty even, so it’s hard to say who would have won this one with both squads at full strength. Team Blue has taken some slow strides towards improvement, while Team Garmes looks worse each week. Justin and McGinty need to get on the same page quickly. It should help to have Luke in the lineup each week, but the overall roster isn’t good enough to win with this “taking turns” bullshit. It might make sense to stagger their minutes more often, letting Justin rest more and allowing McGinty to punish the bad defenders in second units. The two 1-3 teams (Orange and Green) will face off in Week 5 in a Turd Showdown.
Game 2: Team White (Hahn)
vs. Team Red (Dudek)
-The upstart Team Dudek was getting louder each week, starting to grow confident that they were one of the best teams in HatchetBall. Week 4 was their opportunity to prove it, and it didn’t quick go according to plan. Bob Kelly basically got skunked, with just 2 free throws to his name, while Team White used a balanced attack to secure the victory. Still, even with a very uneven team performance, Red stuck around in this one, which is a credit to their depth. Coach Stove will seriously have to consider running more Edgar/Brandner pick and rolls.
Game 3: - Team Yellow
(Vitaliano) vs. Team Green (Koll)
-Matt V’s high-risk gamble in the draft of trading down for a lower pick continues to pay off for him. However, looking back with the luxury of what we know now, his infamous decision to voluntarily take a lower pick wasn’t what has worked well for him. Instead, it was striking gold in the 3rd Round with Konrad Kozina, who has remained white hot over the first 4 weeks of the season. He’s averaging a team-high 23 points per game, which is good for third highest in the entire league. There isn’t a single other player, not drafted in the first round, that is averaging 16+ ppg. Team Green more or less followed the script and Jim Schick dominated in the paint, but they gave up 70 total points to the Matt V Big 3 (Statham, Kelly, Kozina). That’s a dangerous trio, but even in a four on four league, you have to try to make someone else hurt you. Should be a fun battle in Week 5 between White & Yellow, who will both be trying to get to 4-1.
