2019-2020: Week 4 Player Reports

Game 1: Team White (Freddy) vs. Team Orange (Jerry)

-While Captain Jerry was busy snorting some fresh powder, his team turned in one of their best offensive performances of the season against Team White and moved to 3-1 on the year.  Team Orange is currently the only team with 4 players averaging over 16 PPG.  In fact, no other team even has TWO players averaging 16+ per game.  Further, Team Orange has 4 players averaging more points than ANY player on Team White AND Team Blue.  They’re also giving up the most points per game by a wide margin, but you can choose to play better on defense, when needed.  You cannot simply choose to score better; it’s based entirely on personnel and matchups.  Orange has had a few close games, but they’ve already positioned themselves as a legit title contender.  Team White has positioned themselves at the lowest point of the league standings, with their lone win coming from the suspect Team Red.  When all is said and done, those two teams might be fighting to see who won’t make the playoffs at all.  Steigs suffering through another long year.

Game 2: Team Red (Steve) vs. Team Gold (Kelly)

-It’s always a funky thing when a team seems to play better without their best player.  Team Red was minus their first-round pick, the sweet-smelling Chuck Robinson, but somehow still picked up their first win of the season against the young legs of Team Gold.  However, it’s actually obvious why teams play better when their main shot creators are absent: there’s more shots to go around.  Team Red looked engaged from the start and had 3 players score in double-digits for the first time all season.  The Les Brothers alone put up 41 combined points.  Team Gold looks to be regressing the more they play together.  Too much standing around during single player isolations.  They have the physicality to compete with the better teams, but they’ve averaged just 57 ppg over their last three games, which isn’t going to cut it.  By the way, is that Steve Dudek looking useful?  The guy stopped drinking, is playing in two leagues, and put up 11 & 9 in Week 4 earning a shocking 10 free throw attempts (a career high).  Sell high on this turd.  He’ll be a drunken mess again by February at the latest.

Game 3: - Team Black (Matt V) vs. Team Blue (Matt)

-When we switched to 4 on 4 this season, it was expected that the league superstars would matter more than ever.  With less players on the court, the impact of the best players should increase.  The early returns on this idea are varied.  Some top players are thriving while others are barely surviving (Steigerwald: 16.3 ppg – Career Low).  In Week 4, Rob showed the impact that one player can have on a game.  Team Blue simply had no answer for him.  He dominated on the offensive end creating easy buckets all game (24 points & 6 assists) and put on a rebounding clinic (20 rebounds).  Team Blue should have been ready for this.  While their team doesn’t have a go-to player, they do have multiple guys who, as a group, could have worked to disrupt what Rob was doing.  Team Blue just looks average in every way; they’ll need to compensate by playing together or playing harder, neither of which they did in Week 4.  Let’s see what they can manage against Team Orange in Week 5.  Team Black looks to register itself as a title contender in the next couple weeks.  If they take down Team Red in Week 5, they’ll be 3-1 before their shot against the undefeated Green Goblins.
