2019-2020: Week 13 Player Reports
Game 1: Team Gold (Kelly)
vs. Team White (Freddy)
-With 4 players almost in double figures for the first time all season, Team White earned a critical win against the Gold Youngsters. Of note was White’s defense, holding their opponents to just 54 points, which was close to a season low in an essential must-win. The Schick/Steigerwald/Salgado triple-threat has found a nice balance, but they’ll need a supernova performance from Steigerwald to make any noise in the playoffs. Mike is averaging a career-low 15.7 ppg, which just won’t be enough. Team Gold treads water, mostly, even with the loss. They’ll need to rely on their physicality to be a playoff threat.
Game 2: Team Green (Troy)
vs. Team Black (Matt V)
-No miracles here for Team Black. And again, while you can’t blame them for losing the first overall pick a few weeks into the season, they officially have the worst defense in HatchetBall and are the only team giving up over 70 points per game. It would be one thing if they were playing hard and couldn’t come up with enough buckets. That isn’t the case. They’re just getting run over. Their opponents are averaging 83 ppg over their last three losses, which is over 10 points higher than the best offense in HatchetBall. If Team Black loses in Week 14 against the first-place Team Orange, their season is over. However, if Team Black can somehow get the upset win in Week 14 and Team White loses to the surging Team Red, they’ll still make the playoffs, where it’s not impossible that Rob comes back. Have to get there first, though…
Game 3: - Team Red (Steve)
vs. Team Blue (Matt Koll)
-It’s been a long, poop-filled season for Team Red. Just 2 weeks ago, they were on the outside looking in on the playoff picture. And, to be fair, it’s not like they’ve turned anything around. Instead, they’ve simply taken advantage of a couple soft opponents in the last couple weeks to secure two critical wins and lock up a playoff spot. There is no scenario where they miss the playoffs. And as much as we all love to hate on Steve, his team was able to secure the victories and control their own destiny. Steve even looks semi-useful, scoring in double-digits in back-to-back games after having only scored in double figures ONCE ON THE ENTIRE YEAR PRIOR TO THAT. Team Red won’t scare anyone in the playoffs, but they have one of the best offensive weapons in the league and possibly one of the deepest teams in HatchetBall. Can they put it together and stun the world? Nah.
