2018-2019: Week 7 Player Reports
Game 1: Team Kenny
Konrath (Blue) vs. Team Brennan (Red)
-Player attendance will always be a huge factor in a team’s HatchetBall success. Jerry’s sporadic appearances continue to hold his team back and with Steigerwald showing up late to this one, Team Red was facing a tall order in Week 7. Somehow things got much worse for Team Red after Steigerwald showed up and this game was never close. Team Blue continues to hang around, running their record to 3-3. Let’s see where they stand heading into their BYE in Week 11. I think they’d be very happy to duplicate their efforts from the first half of the season and end with a 6-6 regular season record. Team Red, on the other hand, is slipping fast. Worse yet, their schedule looks tough for the next month. With Team Green pulling a big upset in Week 7, they are just one game behind Team Red in the standings. Team Red needs to jump on the Trump bandwagon and demand the construction of a SteigerWall before it’s too late.
Game 2: Team Vito (Teal)
vs. Team Jimmy Konrath (Green)
-It’s become an annual tradition for Mark’s teams to play erratically during the regular season. After 3 big wins in a row, Team Teal was riding high, expecting to trounce the winless Team Green heading into a much anticipated rematch with Team Greek in Week 8. However, with some hot shooting and patient play, Team Green looked nothing like the doormat losers they were building an 0-5 record. Everything clicked for Team Green: Troy scored in a variety of ways, Rappold picked his spots on his way to shooting a high-percentage from the field, and George Georgio was wheeling and dealing in the paint like a young Andre Miller. Team Teal threatened multiple times, but as was seen early in the season, they don’t play well from behind. They tend to lose rhythm and get away from the team ball that served them well during their now-defunct three-game win streak. However, while this one stings, it likely won’t amount to much in the long run. Team Green will still need 2-3 more wins to even consider making the playoffs and Team Teal is only one game away from gaining the advantage for a first-round BYE. Nothing to do here but shake off an ugly loss to the Green Turds.
Game 3: - Team Garmes (Orange) vs. Team Beave (Light Blue)
-Down a couple key players, Team Orange looked poised to run away in this Top-of-the-Standings Showdown. However, #1 pick Tim McGinty played a rugged forty minutes and his squad was able to force overtime before falling short. It’s hard to say if this result reveals that Team Garmes isn’t as good as it appears or that Team Light Blue is better than they appear, but it’s more likely it means nothing at all. Shorthanded rosters behave strangely: sometimes worse, sometimes better. Shortening the bench will usually have a positive effect, unless fatigue is an issue, which it may have been in this overtime contest. Regardless, Team Orange has worked through the entire league on their way to a perfect 6-0 record. After a BYE in Week 8, they’ll play the whole schedule again. They’ll lose at some point, right? RIGHT?!
