2018-2019: Week 6 Player Reports

Game 1: Team Teal (Vito) vs. Team Dark Blue (Matt V)

-Final scores are over-rated.  So are scoring runs during the game.  Everything needs to be analyzed in context.  While Team Teal was ahead by 40 points in this one in the fucking first half, they are not 40 points better than Team Matt V.  And while Matt V’s dogs scrapped their way back in an inversely-lopsided second half, they were a clear underdog to his uncle’s squad.  Team Dark Blue continues to look passive and out of sorts.  Their most successful plays are isolations for McGinty and transition 3’s for Statham.  In the half-court, they are dreadful.  They have no cohesive rhythm and don’t play together.  I doubt they’ve had a double-digit assist game as a team on the season.  They will stay in the mix as long as McGinty and Statham play well at the same time, but it’s hard to keep them both involved simultaneously.  Team Teal, on the other hand, will not shoot as well as they did in Week 6 likely ever again.  But the important plays were the repeated baseline cuts that led to easy buckets again and again.  Mark has sacrificed a ton of shots to encourage sharing the ball and it’s worked well, leading to three straight wins.  After getting the winless Team Green in Week 7, they’ll get a chance to avenge their opening night debacle against the older, shorter, balder Konrath in Week 8.  After a rough start, Team Teal is back in the mix for a first-round playoff BYE, which would be a critical advantage in a year of such league parity.  Team Matt V gets a much-needed BYE in Week 7 before starting the stretch run and trying to get their shit together.  Did anyone notice that Matt V’s recent sober-streak almost matches the government shutdown to the day?  What lessons can we learn from this information?

Game 2: Team Brennan (Red) vs. Team Jimmy Konrath (Green)

-Team Green, with a full roster for once, played one of their best games of the season.  Troy and Rappold both scored over 20 points.  But it wasn’t enough.  This team is exactly as bad as we thought they would be and are a few weeks from being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.  Team Red got a much-needed win heading into another winnable game against Team Greek in Week 7.

Game 3: - Team Garmes (Orange) vs. Team Kenny Konrath (Blue)

-As usual, Team Blue put up a hell of a fight against the last undefeated team in HatchetBall.  If not for some clutch shots, they almost sealed up the game in regulation, but shockingly, Team Orange continues to show poise under pressure.  Expected to be an emotional, erratic team, Team Orange has looked as steady as a heartbeat cruising to a perfect 5-0 record.  Fun game ahead in Week 7 as Team Garmes plays Team Beave with first-place hanging in the balance.
