2018-2019: Week 4 Player Reports

Game 1: Team Beave (Light Blue) vs. Team Kenny Konrath (Green)

-In a battle of teams at the opposite ends of the spectrum, Team Beave easily handled the sputtering Team Green, moving to 4-0 on the season.  They’ve essentially clinched a playoff spot through just a third of their schedule.  Team Green, on the other hand, should already be thinking about an exit plan from their current trajectory.  While only one team will miss the playoffs this season, they won’t be going anywhere unless they put some wins on the board.  Going winless this season, with a lack of dominant teams and the most parity we’ve seen in years, is hard to understand.  But it’s still relatively early and there are three teams with just 1 win.  A small win-streak would change their position dramatically.  Team Green is on BYE in Week 5 and then will start a crucial string of games.  Their goal should be to find a way to get a win before February.

Game 2: Team Garmes (Orange) vs. Team Matt V (Dark Blue)

-All is not well in Matt V-Town.  Because he’s such a snake, I wouldn’t put it past Matt V to be purposely guiding his team towards early season losses in order to demonstrate the “fairness” of his opening night trade shenanigans, but the reality is that his team looks shallow and uninspired so far.  The Dudeks are just filler and Pat Statham has looked lost in his first season without his big bro.  Having two dynamic scorers will still matter over time for Team Matt V, but a bigger problem may be the severe height disadvantage they face every game.  Team Orange has assembled a pretty athletic, stout group that manhandled Matt V’s puny roster all night.  And don’t (ever) forget that big guys do more than block shots and grab rebounds; they also set screens to create good shots on offense.  Young Statham and Old McGinty can both create their own shots, but without big bodies to spring them loose with solid positional picks, those shots won’t be as easy as they could be.  Team Orange seems content to rebound as a unit and utilize a pretty conservative shot selection via back-cuts and penetration.  Maybe their 3-0 record isn’t that surprising after all.  Fuck Matt V.  Fuck ‘em.

Game 3: - Team Brennan (Red) vs. Team Vito (Teal)

-Team Teal finally put together a complete game and, despite some long-range sniping by Mike Steigerwald, they coasted to their first win of the season.  Not all the pieces are working yet for Teal, but their first unit looked much more comfortable in Week 4, taking what the defense gave them time and again.  Poise will be the key for Team Teal if they want to string together multiple victories.  No one is going to blow them out, but they’ll need to stay calm during inevitable momentum shifts in each game.  Interesting matchup between the top-two overall picks in Week 5.  Expect a bloodbath.
