2018-2019: Week 2 Player Reports

Game 1: Team Kenny Konrath (Blue) vs. Team Beave (Light Blue)

-I’m starting to think there might be something to the idea of continuity being an advantage in HatchetBall.  While team Blue was dogshit on paper, it did have the advantage of being, basically, the same group of guys that played together last year on a team that barely squeaked into the playoffs.  While the primary reason they won in Week 1 was due to Mark aging 50 years overnight, Team Blue demonstrates a nice balance on offense and seem to hustle as a group.  However, the limited advantages of cohesion are usually overwrought by sheer talent.  First-overall pick Tim McGinty looked strong leading his team to a 2-0 record.  He shot well and used his size on defense to make a pretty big team look puny.  This game was closer than it should have been down the stretch, showing that Team Blue won’t be the easy out everyone might have expected after trading away their first-round pick, but we’ll see how that premise holds by mid-season, when all the teams are familiar with their roster mechanics.  Klash of the Konraths in Week 3: will Team Blue continue its overachieving ways and get to 2-1 or will Team Green avoid an 0-3 start?

Game 2: Team Jimmy Konrath (Green) vs. Team Garmes (Orange)

-In a game ugly by even 2018-2019 standards, Team Garmes found just enough offense to put away a depleted Team Green.  As expected, the Team Orange 1st Round/2nd Round tandem doesn’t appear to mesh well on the court, but putting the ball in the basket is the most important skill in HatchetBall, and both of these players can score when they keep their composure for the full forty minutes.  Team Green looks like a roster pulled straight from the demented mind of ex-Captain Bo.  Troy is scoring well, again, early in the season, but what this team needs is playmaking.  They can’t just take turns shooting the ball.  Potentially winnable games for both of these squads in Week 3, let’s see if they take advantage.

Game 3: - Team Brennan (Red) vs. Team Matt V (Dark Blue)

-Playing without his first-round draft pick and with the OTHER first-round draft pick (that he stole) looking alarmingly disinterested, Captain Matt V gave himself the ultimate green light in Week 2.  While his 30 shot attempts did lead to 24 points, they did not lead to a win.  Instead, Team Red, missing a couple key players of their own, held steady and brought their record even at 1-1.  Steigerwald posted 21, 14, 5 looking half-buzzed.  Matt V’s squad will square off against the undefeated Team Light Blue in Week 3, while Team Red will catch a BYE week.
