2017-2018: Week 3 Player Reports
Game 1: Team Vito (Blue)
vs. Team Garmes (Red)
-This game confirmed, for the thousandth time, that you can’t win alone in HatchetBall. Kevin Harrigan has been on a rampage the first two weeks of the season, scoring well over forty points per game, but all it has netted Team Red is a close victory against an undermanned Team Dark Blue in Week 2. Even with the tragic injury to Mike Davis in this one, leaving Team Vito extremely shallow for the rest of the campaign, Team Red doesn’t seem to have firepower anywhere else on its roster. Kevin will keep them in games, for certain, but he’ll need some help, especially on the defensive end and in team rebounding situations, if Team Red will factor into the championship scenarios. Losing Davis will certainly change the fortunes of Team Vito. On paper, it would increase the burden on Steve Dudek, which is a recipe for disaster. Steve turned in his steadiest performance of the season by being more selective with his shot in Week 3, but he’ll need to look to shoot more if there’s any hope of taking some defensive attention away from Rob. Godspeed.
Game 2: Team Tierney
(Light Blue) vs. Team Brennan (Green)
-Speaking of thin rosters, Team Green was further handicapped by the loss of its 2nd round draft pick before their matchup in Week 3. Team Tierney played without their 1st round pick (due to injury), which might have evened things out, but instead turned into a blessing in disguise, as Team Tierney shared the ball beautifully and seemed to get contributions from all over the roster. Team Green should have its replacement player in Week 4, but there are justified concerns over how much that might matter with a squad that looks like a fat sack of piss on the court.
Game 3: - Team Spadoni (Grey) vs. Team Konrath
(Dark Blue)
-Team Spadoni has capitalized on the early season chaos, moving their record to 3-0 on the year. They still seem very beatable, overall, but they’ve shown good energy as a cohesive group that can play together. Are they now the favorite to win it all? Team Konrath looks crappy, as expected. Luke failed to score a field goal, which is a huge problem. It will only get harder for Mike to carry the scoring load if teams lose interest in guarding Luke at all. Big matchup between Team Green and Team Dark Blue in Week 4. One of these shitbox teams has to win, I suppose. Dark days for some of the HatchetBall elite.
