2017-2018: Week 2 Player Reports

Game 1: Team Konrath (Dark Blue) vs. Team Garmes (Red)

-This was the mystery game of the week, seeing as both squads were on BYE for Week 1.  Still, the game went more or less to plan, with Kevin Harrigan leading the way for Team Red.  Blue crept back into this one in the way I think a lot of teams will stay with Team Red, which is by exploiting a weak interior.  Team Red’s first two draft picks weigh about 250 pounds combined.  In a vacuum, you should take speed first, but size does matter for easy buckets.  The majority of Kevin’s points came on WIDE-open threes and breakaway layups after sloppy passes.  Dark Blue slowly edged their way back in by hitting the glass and playing with some physicality.  Missing Luke hurt Team Dark Blue in this one, but they will need far better guard play to keep up with the top half of the league, and Luke won’t help with that obviously.  Team Red moves to 1-0.

Game 2: Team Spadoni (Grey) vs. Team Bo (Orange)

-Team Spideroni looked sharp again in an easy win.  They have a nice balance of scorers, which should get them a great record in the regular season.  Still, their athleticism other than Jerry is basically zero, so they will have to play some flawless team ball in the playoffs to contend.  Bo’s team shows flashes, but far too infrequently to take them seriously yet.  Worse, they don’t seem like the type of team that will take adversity well.  If, at the halfway point of the season, they find themselves with a 1-5 or 2-4 record, it’s hard to see them changing course and righting the ship.  They have the talent to stay in games, but they need to work on prolonged, focused organization on both ends of the floor.  If they don’t, the season will be over sometime in January.

Game 3: - Team Yellow (Matt V) vs. Team Vito (Blue)

-Short-staffed and out-gunned, Team Blue got smoked in this snoozefest.  Matt V has always had a knack for favorable scheduling.  He caught Team Blue, which figures to be a heavy hitter this year, without their top two draft picks and they took care of them easily, despite Stove’s pathetic efforts to stay competitive.  Two lessons from this game: first, Team Yellow still doesn’t look dominant.  There seems to be an element missing from their team, but their two cakewalks so far haven’t revealed what that element might be.  Second, sell high on Steve in next year’s draft.
