2016-2017: Week 12 Player Reports

9:00 - Team Vito (Orange) vs. Team Tierney (Dark Blue)

-Down their second best scorer, Dark Blue was still feisty in this one.  George Georgio is rounding back into his scrappy form and Kevin Harrigan is carrying the scoring load.  They continue to have a tough time keeping teams from scoring near the basket, so they’ll need Tierney to pack on a few more pounds and take up more space in the paint.  Orange was steady and can certainly bring their own physicality if needed.  Rob put up some big numbers in this game, but they were mostly inflated by an unnecessary amount of pointless free throws down the stretch.  Rob shot almost as many free throws in this game as he has all year long.  Jer-He Ha-Han puttered around for a pretty average game.

10:00 - Team Vito (Green) vs. Team Beave (Grey)

-Well, now.  It’s hard to believe now, but Team Grey was actually considered one of the deeper, more dangerous teams in HatchetBall.  And, still, on paper they look like a solid team full of diverse talents that would be ideal for HatchetBall success.  But none of that promise has translated to the court.  Team Grey has been the laziest, sorriest bunch of selfish gunners we’ve ever seen assembled in HatchetBall.  They raced out to an 0-8 start to the season and it seemed like a waste of time to even play their Week 12 game against the undefeated Team Green, who was a perfect 8-0.  But that’s why we still play the games, even when there is a heavy favorite.  Team Green looked disinterested from the beginning of this one.  They did have a cushion late in the second half, but it dwindled quickly and they eventually succumbed in double-overtime to the winless Team Grey.  Not only was this a historic loss in terms of record disparity, it also might have confirmed how beatable Team Green is when their perimeter/transition game isn’t working.  It also exposed how important the curly haired Brazilian is to their defense, as they repeated got shredded without Varejo to spearhead their helpside defense.  In the long run, this game won’t matter, as Team Green is all but guaranteed a first-round playoff BYE and Team Grey will not make the playoffs at all.  But I’m still glad it happened.  And, also, fuck Matt V.

11:00 - Team Bo (Yellow) vs. Team Guinane (Light Blue)

-In a battle of the two teams struggling to hold on to the last two playoff spots, Team Yellow won a critical game in Week 12 over Team Light Blue.  With their final three games against Red, Orange, and Blue, this game was a must win, for sure.  And it really wasn’t close from the outset.  Light Blue continues to slide, losing their fourth in a row.  It’ll be interesting to watch both of these teams down the stretch as the bottom feeders scrap for the final playoff spots.
