Week Eight and Mid-Season Player Reports

I'm happy to announce the official reveal of the first-ever HatchetBall Player Rater and Player Rankings.  Not that I give two shits whether you agree with my formula or not, but a short explanation is needed.  My goal for the Player Rater was to focus on three core areas: a balanced stat line (meaning that you actually contribute in all the statistical areas we track), a good team record, and being awarded Player of the Week.  No player rating system is perfect and they'll all be biased towards certain types of players, so keep that in mind.  Here are the multipliers that were used in the formula:

The main statistical categories were balanced against each other by using league averages.  For example, the average points per game across HatchetBall is 14.94.  The league average for rebounds per game is 8.03.  Another way of looking at these stats in relation to each other is that rebounds are 1.86 times harder to get in comparison to scoring a single point.  The same process was used to get the correct "multiplier" for all the statistical categories.  Each player was also awarded 15 points per team win, 25 points per Player of the Week award, 1 point for each free throw converted, and 2 points were taken away for each free throw missed.  Lastly, a consideration was made for the built-in advantage of having quality teammates that inflate your team wins.  To try and correct for this advantage, each player was deducted 5 points for each teammate that we track stats for.  Here's how the rankings shook out:

Mark Koll: Before you wet yourself in frustration over a player ranking system created by the #1 ranked player in that system, take a closer look at the stats.  The ranking system is set up to give much heavier weight to stats that are harder to come by.  As it turns out, blocks and 3-Pointers are the two "rarest" individual stats.  Mark leads the league in 3-pointers per game and is second in blocks per game.  On top of that, Mark has a Player of the Week award and is obliterating everyone (as usual) in free throw shooting: Mark has ten more made free throws than anyone in HatchetBall, has missed just three all year, and he's attempting 6.5 per game.  These factors make him the highest-ranked player in HatchetBall.

Matt Koll: Matt comes up second in the player ranker.  At first glance, one would assume this is because he seems to be the only player blocking shots any more (which gives it great value from a statistical perspective).  Blocked shots are also a bit of an "iceberg" stat, with much greater implied value.  If you're blocking 2 shots a game, how many are you affecting?  Five times that many?  Ten times?  Blocks matter.  But while his huge advantage in blocked shots per game helps his overall rating, don't forget that Matt also leads the league with over 6 assists per game and has garnered two Player of the Week awards.  With double-digit rebounding added in, the only area Matt falls behind is scoring average, which is valued the least by the Player Rater.

Matt Vitaliano: I'll even admit this was a head-scratcher.  I figured Matt V would fall at the bottom of this list, regardless of how you valued the stats.  However, Matt V has a few things going for him that boosted him into the #6 position.  For one, his team is undefeated, and that has to be a major component of how you value a player (I would even give him a little extra credit for being responsible for bringing this squad together).  And while most of his player value is accumulated from team wins, he is Top-5 in 3-Pointers per game and won a Player of the Week award somehow.  If you take that POW award away, he falls to #11 on the list, but those awards are highly valued as they represent acknowledgement from other players of a special performance.

Rob Knapczyk: Rob falls in at fourth position on the player rater.  Rob could contend for the top of this list, but has three things working against him at the moment: he has zero blocked shots, he has zero Player of the Week awards, and he basically maxed out the teammate deduction, losing 20 points for having such a stacked team around him.  His other stats are strong, but he doesn't lead the league in any statistical category, so fourth place just about makes sense for the Polish Penis Puller.

Luke A: Coming in at number 9 on the list is a fitting punishment for not contributing much on a great team.  Duke-Ass doesn't stand out in any category and hasn't won a Player of the Week award through Eight Weeks.  His assists and blocks should be higher.  No system would value the stats Luke is carrying right now.

Dave Troy: Troy comes in at 9th on the Player Rater.  This is somewhat surprising, considering he is scoring at an all-time high and his team is a solid 4-2.  However, Troy has yet to wow his fellow HatchetBallers and earn a Player of the Week award and he's in the bottom half of the league for everything except points and 3-PTs.  You'd have to think Troy has a lot of upside in the Player Rater though, as he's sure to nab a couple POW's before the year is out if he continues his hot shooting.

Mike Steigerwald: Mike clocks in with a solid 5th ranking.  His points are down this year and he seems to take Rob's approach to shot blocking, which both hurt him, but he's a POW award or two away from shooting further up the ladder.

Steve Dudek: Steve is a good example of the Player Rater working correctly.  Most people agree Steve has really elevated his game this season, playing more consistently and contributing in a variety of ways for the dominant Team Dark Blue.  His two Player of the Week awards give him a gaudy point total, but he also brings a diverse stat sheet to the table.  It's scary to think that his score should actually be much higher; his awful free throw shooting has cost him a bunch of points.

Mike Davis: Mike's position on the Player Rater doesn't reflect his true value to a team, obviously.  His aggression and physicality make him, likely, the best rebounder in HatchetBall.  However, his blocks and assists are both down this season on a better team (which is confusing) and he's on pace to threaten Matt Koll's records for shitty free-throw shooting.  While he tops the league in rebounds (the second-worst valued stat in the Player Rater), he isn't in the top half for any other statistical category.

Paul Hobe: So let's be honest, Paul's score is almost entirely constituted by his team wins and his sole Player of the Week award.  His stats are lower than most of the players ranker behind him.  However, again, the two factors he excelled in (a great team record and a league-wide agreement that he was the BEST player for an entire week) are things that matter and are directly controlled by the player.  Juxtaposing Paul against Mike Davis, who excels in catching the ball after an opponent misses a shot (which is all a rebound is), Paul's accolades should be valued higher at this point in the season.

Mark Vitaliano: Mark is ranked 10th currently, but sits just about 20 points from 5th place.  That's worth keeping in mind.  One extra win or POW award, and a player can jump up the rankings very quickly.  Mark's played up and down through the midway point, but if he steps up his consistency, he can easily put himself on the top half of the rankings.
