Week Sixteen Player Reports

Mark Koll: Well, it wasn't a pretty season by any means, but it's worth looking back on this regular season and noting the things that were against Mark.  First, he got by far the most experienced roster in HatchetBall.  And by experienced, I mean ancient.  Early on, his roster's oldness was a difficult barrier to deal with.  Second, Team Orange turned out to be the only team to had to play Team Grey at full force in Week One.  Lastly, Mark fell victim to two buzzer beater losses in back to back weeks.  Admittedly, this type of misfortune is completely avoidable, but that doesn't mean those winning shots HAD to go down.  If things played out a bit differently, Team Orange could have easily went 9-3 or even 10-2.  That's not the way it turned out, but it didn't matter in the end.  With another win over the pathetic Team Green, Team Orange secured a #2 seed and that all-important first-round BYE in the playoffs.  Unsurprisingly, Mark is just one win away from getting back to his seventh straight championship game.

What's Next: Team Orange will get the higher-seeded of the quarterfinal advancing teams, but in a field where the 3-6 seeds were ALL 6-6, does this really matter?  Team Orange will be a favorite over every time except Dark Blue in the playoffs.

Matt Koll: Despite a mental breakdown early in the season, Matt Koll played a strong second half and finished the season with averages of 8, 10, 5, 2.  Perhaps more importantly, Matt was one of only two players with perfect attendance this season (along with Mark V), which was crucial in a year plagued by injuries and no-shows.  He'll need to be at his best in the playoffs, where teams will throw all their focus on his younger, more handsome brother.  If Matt can chip in 10-15 points per game, rebound, and play his usual stingy defense, Team Orange will have a great chance to grab the title.

What's Next: Probably a lot of pal-ing around with Drish over his Spring Break, coupled by some light oral sex thrown into their flirty teasing.

Dave Troy:  After a major outburst early on and then a stinky-stinky-poo lull about half way into the season, Troy finished strong and led (seriously) Team Yellow into the playoffs.  He set career highs all over the place along the way.  But those will all be forgotten if Team Yellow can't steal a victory in the playoffs.  They will be an underdog whoever they play, but maybe that's a good thing on a team that prefers such an ugly style of play.

What's Next: Team Yellow will get a turnaround rematch against Team Blue next week.  This time, it's personal.  And by personal, I mean, this time, it's the first-round of the playoffs.

Mike Steigerwald: His team didn't need much from him in the regular season finale, but Mike will need to produce a bunch more than 18 points if Team Blue is going anywhere in the playoffs.  They still have a very solid group of guys to work with, as long as the effort is there.  Mike is still looking for his first championship appearance.  Is this the year?

What's Next: Some long nights working on his game up at Rainey Park.

Mark Vitaliano: Now that the regular season is over, the contrast in Mark's performance is clear as day.  Mark scored a total of 112 points in his team's six wins, for an average of 18.67 ppg.  Mark scored a total of just 57 points in his team's six losses, for an average of 9.5 ppg.  In those six wins, Mark never scored less than 13 points.  In those six losses, Mark never scored over 13 points.  It's amazing.  But the lesson is simple: Mark needs to be involved for Team Blue to find success in the playoffs.  It's key that his teammates help him along, but ultimately, Mark will have to impose his will and make himself a constant factor.

Eric Mittermann: DNP in Week Sixteen.

What's Next: Congratulations on a successful rookie season.  This is not to say you played well or made any progress or played any games of importance or with any important players, but congratulations on staying injury free in a season that saw 23% of the players go down to season-ending injuries.  Chin up, kid.  You've got your health and the hope that Bo won't draft you next year.
