Week Five Player Reports

Mark Koll: Fresh off his honeymoon, Mark did not play his best game against a well-balanced Team Orange.  While he still scored 28 points, it took him a lot of shots to get there, and even worse, he missed several easy opportunities that he usually converts.  Team Dark Blue looks like a lot different without their Luke-A-Like looking like Luke out there.  Team Orange put up almost a hundred points, exposing Team Dark Blue time and again.  They'll have to play better against the better teams or they'll risk an early post-season exit.

What's Next: Mark gets a fast turnaround against Team Light Green in Week Six.

Matt Koll: Matt Koll looked dominant in Week Five without his wingman Jerry.  He rebounded and controlled the tempo en route to an easy win.  Both teams were short important pieces, but that makes these games even more important.  In a year where there is more team parity than ever, playoff seeding will be critical.  A BYE is everything.  Light Green seems capable of getting one of the two first-round BYEs, but that will require Matt Koll stepping up every week.

What's Next: Matt Koll takes on his more handsome brother in a Koll showdown in Week Six.

Matt Vitaliano: Matt V is always good for a couple 20+ point games a season and chose an excellent time to drop one against Team Dark Blue in Week Five.  He scored 21 points on 7 longballs.  Some may look at his stat line and think, "what a wastoid.  He does nothing but shoot threes."  But that type of shot making is critical in HatchetBall.  Not only does it put pressure on the other team by putting points on the board, it also spreads the defense out, which was hugely helpful to Rob and Big Baby Danaher, who feasted in the paint in the second half.  Matt V's sharpshooting helped make that possible.

What's Next: Team Orange will look to push their record past .500 against Team Grey after a BYE in Week Six.

Rob Knapczyk: What's all that about a knee injury?  Rob has had to transform his game some from the aggressive slasher he used to be, but his production is as good as ever.  Rob put up 38 points for the second week in a row as Team Orange cruised to an easy win.  Most importantly, Rob is scoring in a variety of ways.  He's making his outside shots, but he's also mixing it up on the offensive glass, getting out on the break, and finishing hard on his drives to the hoop.  Also, Rob leads HatchetBall in free throw attempts, which is always the sign of a great scorer.

What's Next: Team Orange has a week off before a matchup with Team Grey in Week Seven.

Dave Troy: Troy put up a career high in points in Week Five, with 23 big ones.  Unfortunately, and the same goes for Mark, it seemed like every basket they scored was immediately given right back on the defensive end.  It's saying something that Dark Blue scored almost 80 points in this contest and lost by 20.  Troy and Mark will have to put some better effort into the defensive end if they want to topple the heavyweight teams.

What's Next: Troy will get a good chance to practice defense against the offensively-challenged Team Light Green in Week Six.

Mike Steigerwald: Mike got a heavy dose of reality in Week Five playing without his male escort Luke. While Mike still put up a big-time 28 points, he had to work hard to get there.  As HatchetBall becomes deeper, it will be essential to have two offensive playmakers on your team.  Luke, while not expert at any one particular thing, plays hard and involves himself on almost every possession, either by passing or screening to get other people open.  Without Luke, Mike had to resort to several one on one plays to get his points.  This is not a good way to operate and Team Red lost by a wide margin because of it.

What's Next: Mike will be paired back up with Luke the Facilitator in Week Seven against Team Yellow.

Mike Davis: Mike continued his rebounding dominance in Week Five, pulling down a season best 22.  However, he had those 22 rebounds locked up with 4 minutes to go in regulation, just 1 shy of the all-time record of 23 (held by Matt Koll).  And even though the game would go into overtime, Mike couldn't record even one more rebound.  What a waste.  However, rebounding at the clip he is, Mike will shatter the single season record and will likely break Matt Koll's single game record before long.  If only he knew how to make a layup...

What's Next: Light Blue will get a good opportunity to snag their second win against Team Yellow in Week Six.

Mark Vitaliano: Mark struggled in Week Five, finishing with only 12 points and five rebounds.  Whether he likes it or not, Mark is the best offensive weapon Light Blue has.  he'll have to score somewhere around 20 points a game if they want to string together some W's.

What's Next: Light Blue will look to improve upon their 1-3 record in Week Six against the lowly Team Yellow.
