Week One Player Reports
Mark Koll: A year ago, much
was made of
the fact that Mark's team would not compete for a HatchetBall
title. Flash forward one year later, and
Mark is riding a streak of three consecutive championships. Admittedly, Week One was not pretty for
Mark's current team, but the thing to remember is that Mark will do
whatever it
takes to keep his team relevant. Week One was not ideal, as Mark chucked up brick after
brick,
clunking his way to a disappointing 16 points and 13 rebounds, but this
game is
probably not a great indicator for how the season will go for this
squad. There are some good pieces here;
the
question, as always, is how the team plays during the stretch run.
What's Next: Mark will have a chance to get his team to .500 against Team Red, against Steigerwald and Luke, who looked impressive in a Week One runaway.

Matt Koll: Matt obviously
will never be a
focal point of any offensive attack. So,
understandably, we were all a little hesitant when we saw that he was
paired
with Jerry for this year's campaign.
They play a very similar brand of basketball.
The obvious question was "where are the
buckets going to come from?" And
that question was mostly answered. Matt
put in his usual stout effort, gathering 12 points, 10 rebounds, and a
pair of
blocks...but the real revelation was the play of rookie Kyle Whirity, who poured in well over thirty points
for Mick
Brennan's lineup. If Whirity
can provide the offensive firepower, Matt and Jerry can content
themselves with
garbage points and A-For-Effort hustle plays.
If the shots fall, this team will be tough to top.
What's Next: Matt and Jerry get a shot to run their record to 2-0 in a favorable matchup against Team Spider Monkey in Week Two.

Matt Vitaliano: Matt V was
pretty excited
about the roster he put together for 2014-2015, and in the first half
of his
Week One matchup, things looked good for
the feisty
old codger. Then the second half started
and Matt V's boys crumbled like Matt Koll
in an
interrogation room. There shouldn't be
any cause for alarm though. Matt V does
have a deep team; they just need to define roles a little better and
they
should cruise to one of the top three seeds come playoff time.
What's Next: Matt
V's team gets a BYE to recharge in Week Two.
In Week Three, they'll face the upstart Team Vito, who are riding high off an excellent Week One showing. Get ready for that one: it'll be a big fat Vitaliano clusterfuck.

Rob Knapczyk: It figures to
be a big year
for the young Polish phenomenon. Rob
slugged through a shortened season in 2013-2014 before bailing out to
get his
knee looked at by someone other than a "dick doctor" in a Boy's Town
alleyway. And while starting with a Week
One loss wasn't ideal, Rob looked strong.
He was getting into the lane and shot 9 free throws, making 8. He finished with 25 points and 9 rebounds,
but his leadership will be key if he wants
to snag his
first HatchetBall championship.
What's Next: Rob
will get Week Two off to ice his nads.

Luke A: Luke doesn't have to worry too much about his
roster each
year. As long as you give him one or two
shooters or playmakers, he's going to be useful. And
because the draft has gotten so much
deeper over the last few years, he always seems to get paired with an
elite
scorer. This year Luke is paired up with
Steigerwald and it looked like a great fit
in Week
One. They might have played the worst
team in HatchetBall (time will tell), but
Luke's
squad seemed more fluid than any other Week One team by a mile. Luke put up a tasty stat line with 9 points,
16 rebounds, and 5 assists. Will he get
another triple double this year? Or were
those just Luke-a-Flukes?
What's Next: Luke and company are back at it in Week two against Bo's Brethren.

Jerry Hahn: Last year, on the eve of opening night for HatchetBall, Jerry got himself cold-cocked and
missed his
Week One game. Luckily, Jerry stayed out
of trouble this time around and was able to help his team grab a
come-from-behind win. Jerry's numbers
weren't spectacular (7 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists) but it's worth
pointing
out that most of his damage was done in the second half when his team
fell into
a rhythm. Jerry's energy and
selflessness will always be a major boost to any team, so look for a
few big
games from Jerry this season.
What's Next: Jerry will look for
his first double-double of the
season against Team Tom Johnson.

Mike Steigerwald: It's
always baffling
why there seems to be a "reset" button each year in HatchetBall. Each
season, it's as if people forget everything they know about a player. Mike, after a very productive rookie season,
came out guns blazing in Week One, and his opponents did very little to
stop
him. He really had his way, getting open
looks and easy buckets the entire game.
Things shouldn't be that easy moving forward, but kudos to him
for
taking advantage to put up big numbers in Week One with 31 points, 8
rebounds,
and 4 assists.
What's Next: Mike
will look for similar numbers against Team Dark Blue in Week Two.

Steve Dudek: I guess we
should take it
easy on Steve, as you can't expect too much out of
a
rookie in their first game. There's
quite a bit to get used to HatchetBall:
the slow
defenders, the bald heads, the fat guts...but it's safe to say we
expected a
little more production from Steve in Week One.
He finished with just 2 points.
At the very least, we can be sure that his captain expected more
out of
him. While he was active with 9 rebounds and 3 assists, the biggest
value he
brings is outside shooting. If he can't
hit shots, then it makes it that much harder for Rob to get open looks. Look for Steve to get himself rolling once he
sees a few longballs fall.
What's Next: Steve
will get a week off to learn how to shoot before returning to action in
Week
Three.

Mike Davis: A late addition to the HatchetBall universe, Mike proved himself a force immediately. He brings a level of aggression and athleticism that is unmatched. His 12 points and 18 rebounds in his debut game are a strong signal of what's to come.
What's Next: Mike
will get a week off to rest his giant teeth in Week Two before getting
back at
it against Matt V's squad in Week Three.

Mark Vitaliano: After a
long hiatus, Mark
V returned to HatchetBall action like he
never
left. He looked spry as fuck.
He scored, rebounded, and even knocked in a
couple long range bombs. In other news,
reigning league MVP Mark Koll has taken up
cycling
for its positive effects on basketball performance.
What's Next: Mark
V will look to keep the good times rolling in Week Three against his
big
brother.
