Week One Player Reports
Mark Koll: Per the norm,
Mark came out
guns blazing in Week One. He finds
himself playing with a few familiar faces and a few unfamiliar ones. But regardless of who he is playing with, he
has been able to produce at a high level over the years.
Expect much of the same in 2013-2014. On
paper, it would figure to be tough
sledding for his team to match up with some of the deeper, more
talented teams
in the league, but Mark always finds a way to keep his team in
contention. With a scrappy bunch of smart
players, one
can assume he'll be vying for his third championship in a row
come springtime. In Week One, he dropped
36 points and snagged 8 rebounds. He may
not shoot that well again the entire season, but with the composition
of his
team, he may be headed for a prodigious year, numbers-wise.
What's Next: Mark will get an
early-season test in Week Two against Dark Blue in another classic
showdown
between the Koll brothers.
Blood will spill.

Matt Koll: Yet again
promising a return
to offensive brilliance in 2013-2014, Matt demonstrated much of the
same in his
Week One slaughter of Team Light Green.
He played solid help-side defense and was effective on the
boards, but
there was none of that offensive aggression he'll need to get his
numbers out
of the cellar. It isn't necessarily the
number of shots attempted, either.
Scoring is a mindset. And, thus
far, Matt has deferred to the days of old, passing first and not
blatantly
looking to score. His team could use
some extra scoring from him, too. They
have a nice, deep roster, but they seem thin on playmakers and shooters. If Matt wants to get back on top and claim
his third title in four years, he'll need to step outside his comfort
zone more
often.
What's Next: Matt
and the boys will be squaring off against Team Grey in Week Two in what
promises to be an early season clash of heavyweights.

Matt Vitaliano: Feasting on
the general
stupidity of the rest of the captains, Matt V used good draft strategy,
luck,
and trade finesse to assemble what is undoubtedly the most talented
team in the
league. However, I remember saying very
similar things about the team he drafted last year, a team that barely
made it
out of the first round of the playoffs.
But a tip of the cap is due to this aging wonder, as he set out
to put
together a contender, and has clearly done just that.
On the court, his skills remain limited, but
based on Week One, he seems to fit better
with this
group than the group he drafted a year ago.
With all the attention Rob and

Team Danaher.

Rob Knapczyk: It's been an
interesting
off-season for Rob. For years, he's
complained that, as the consensus first pick of the draft, that his
roster was
depleted to the point that it was too difficult to secure a
championship. By the
way of a freak
injury, Rob, more or less, got his wish.
His draft position fell to second (though probably not because
of the
injury) and he got paired with some great players.
This is definitely Rob's best chance to grab
his first HatchetBall title.
The interesting question is what exact role
Rob will play in the hunt for that title.
In Week One, he finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. But he struggled around the basket and his
transition game has melted away completely with the loss of mobility
he's
struggling through as he rehabs his knee.
Without those easy buckets, not only will his numbers drop, his
team
function may change to that of outside shooter, which could spell
trouble on a
team over-stocked with shoot-first types.
What's Next: In
Week Three, Rob will have a chance to build a little more cohesion with
this new teammates and they can start the
process of
defining roles. Who is the main
playmaker on this team? Is it Rob? Is it

Luke A: Like Rob, Luke will also benefit this season from
Matt V's
solid draft. He's going to play a key
role in keeping their team organized when the inevitable night comes
that Chad
wants 30 shots, Rob wants 30 shots, and Matt V dies of old age. He'll have to be the glue-guy and do a little
bit of everything. Week One was a nice start in that direction. Luke piled up 4 points, 7 rebounds, 4
assists, and 6 blocks. He continued his
poor free-throw shooting (going an abysmal 0 for 4), but he set the HatchetBall all-time record for blocks in a game. Always good to start the year with a
performance like that, even if most of those "blocks" were blatant
fouls.
What's Next: Luke
and the gang are off in Week Two, but return for an easy one in Week
Three
against the self-destructive Team Danaher.

Jerry Hahn: Jerry was a late scratch in Week One,
getting himself
into a pickle the night before. His team
fell to Matt V's Team Yellow and he was listed as a DNP.

Dave Troy: Dave seems to
have drawn the shortest straw this year.
It isn't that his team lacks ability; they have 3-4 solid
players. The issue is that most of those
players are
whiney, moody babies that would rather complain than hustle back on
defense.
What's Next: After
a much-needed week off in Week Two,
